Frequently Asked Questions About EEG Testing

At BC Diagnostics LLC in Irving, TX, we want our patients to understand the electroencephalogram (EEG) process before they undergo testing. Being informed about the procedure can help assuage any worries you may have as well as empower you to have a stronger role in your care.

What Is an EEG?

Commonly used to diagnose or rule out seizures or epileptic disorders, an EEG is a test that measures and records the electrical activity of the brain.

What Is an EEG Used For?

An EEG can help diagnose the presence, as well as the type, of epileptic disorders. Physicians can also use this test to evaluate tumors, head injuries, encephalitis, and other conditions that affect the brain. Additionally, an EEG can be used to confirm or rule out sleeping disorders, memory problems, and dementia.

What Do I Need to Do Before an EEG?

The night before the test, wash your hair but do not use sprays, conditioners, or oils. For eight hours before the EEG, you should avoid all foods and beverages that contain caffeine. Also, you may be asked to shorten your sleeping time the night before if you have to sleep during the test.

Will the EEG Hurt?

The test is not painful. The electrodes only record activity and do not cause discomfort. However, in some rare cases, skin irritation may occur.
